People are starting to use their mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones, more and more for every day tasks. With more companies having mobile apps, paying bills, organizing your calendar, and checking your email can all be done in the palm of your hand rather than on your lap.
Due to the mobility of audiences, it’s more important than ever to have a mobile-friendly, responsive web design for your business.
What is a responsive website design?
A responsive web design is just a fancy term that means that a website has been designed and constructed so that all the website content and structure remains the same for every device is it viewed on.
For example, if you view Indiana Spine Group’s website on a desktop, tablet, or smartphone – you will still get a high-quality, easy to navigate website as seen below.
A responsive website design helps businesses stay consistent. Instead of having to spend time designing separate designs for the multiple platforms, you just have one!
Why is responsive website design important?
As stated at the beginning of this article, mobile device usage is increasing more and more every day. In an eCommerce study conducted by Monetate about mobile usage, they found that from 2012 to 2013, there was an 8.41% decrease of traditional computer viewers, a 5.03% increase in tablet viewers and a 3.38% increase in smartphone users. Now, I know that sounds like a bunch of statistics so I’ll just sum it up in one simple prediction:
- In 2014 mobile Internet usage is expected to overtake desktop usage.
Who thinks responsive website design is important?
1. Your customers
In 2012 we wrote a blog post about mobile design that included statistics from Google explaining the importance of having a mobile-friendly website.
In a survey of about 1,100 U.S. adult smartphone users (not tablets, in this case), conducted by market research firms Sterling Research and SmithGeiger, here is what they found:
- Two-thirds of smartphone users say a mobile-friendly site makes them more likely to buy a company’s product or service.
- 61% says that if they don’t find what they’re looking for (probably within about five seconds), they’ll click away to another site.
2. Google
Google is a large power house in regards to search market share. claiming 67 percent of the market. In 2012 at an iSEO panel, Pierre Far, a Google Webmaster Trends Analyst, announced that you should have a responsive design when possible.
Why is this? Responsive designs help Google bots crawl your website more effective and efficiently, allowing your website to have the best opportunity to show up in Google’s search results.
If I haven’t advocated enough for your business to get a responsive web design, take one more fact into account:
- 72% of users say a mobile-friendly site is important to them, but a nearly unanimous 96% have visited sites that aren’t.
You know what that means? With a responsive web design for your business, you can be a step ahead of your competitors!
